Healthy College Grocery List
Let me be the first one to admit that eating healthy in college is ridiculously hard. There's zero time to finish all your readings, let alone cook a well-balanced meal! Grocery shopping is the key to success, but its really easy to go way over budget.
Keep it simple
Don't stress too much about making sure everything is organic or eco-friendly, clean and pesticide free all those things will make a product more expensive and we're broke college kids. Don't beat yourself up if you're buying prepackaged food- sometimes it's necessary with a busy schedule.
Remember the food pyramid that was forced upon us in grade school. Well think of that now, it's actually super important when considering your grocery list. Here are the groups you need to keep in mind when shopping:
- Fruits
- Vegetables
- Grains/Carbs
- Meats
- Diary
- Snacks
There are a lot of healthy options for each group. Here are some tips for getting started grocery shopping in college.
Money Saving Tips
Grocery shopping can be majorly expensive, especially on a college budget. I've found that the easiest way to keep the cost down is by using a list (and sticking to it!) as well as using some money saving apps. Here are some resources for keeping cost down as a college student!
- Ibotta - The Ibotta app lets you get rebates on all your recipients. It works will most retailers, and it's basically free money! All you have to do is scan your receipt to start your receipt to start getting cash back on purchases you're already making.
- Grocery Pal - The Grocery Pal app lets you see local coupons and discounts all in one place.
- Newspaper - I know this is more of a old fashioned method but in the newspaper all your local grocery stores will advertise the weekly deals that they're having.
As you can see there are many ways to be healthy. It's all about finding the right balance for you. Don't be afraid to make it your own.
